Trombone Shorty

These lessons should cover all of your class times.  Use the packets provided...

Lesson ONE...

Watch this...

Pass out packets to the students.  Allow them to take a quick walk through the packet.  You may be met with resistance.  Students should be told that this is the activity that was left for them and that it is not a negotiable.

​Students should turn to page two.  Have the students look at the cover of the book by scrolling down to the video.  You can do this as a whole group activity.  Allow students time to write down their answers.  Some students may need help with spelling.

​Watch the story after answering the Pre-reading questions.

Students must stay behind their chairs and may not move around the room.  If a student chooses not to do the activities they must at least stand.

Review...

Using the post reading questions ask the children to turn and talk.  They will have 3 minutes to talk about each question.  They should report out after each question and the timer should be reset.  Use the timer below.
Students should be prepared to share out.

Lesson TWO

Start by moving...

Students must stay behind their chairs and may not move around the room.  If a student chooses not to do the activities they must at least stand.

Review...

Play the story of Trombone Shorty (above) again for the class.  Explain the you know that they have already heard the story but that they will need this information for the next exercises.  After the video move to the next section.

Answer this...

Ask students to turn the 3rd page (Comprehension questions).  Read each question out loud and ask for student volunteers to answer them in turn.

Is there still time?  Watch this...

Explain to the students:
This is a video of Trombone Shorty at the age of 13.  How long until you all are 13?  (allow students to answer)  

Students should be reminded that they listen by using their eyes to watch the screen and their ears to listen to the music .  Their mouths are quiet and their bodies are still.

Lesson THREE

Ask the children what they recall about the story of Trombone Shorty.

​Use the picture below to complete the Making Observations activity.  Students DO NOT need to write about what they observe but should turn and talk about what they see an they should be prepared to share out.  Use the 5 minute timer guide their use of turn and talk time.

Try this!

Ask the students to turn to the 4th page in the packet.  Explain that they will be trying to make as many words as possible out of the letters in the words TROMBONE SHORTY.  Stop after about 10 minutes.  Stating from 1 ask how many words they were able to make.  ("Raise your hand if you found 1 word...2 words...3 words...etc...)

  2. What was different?
  3. Which do you like the best?

Time to Think...

Ask the children If they know what "Character Traits" are.  Have them watch this video...
Ask the children to list some character traits of Trombone Shorty.  Write them down using this link:

EACH CLASS HAS A DIFFERENT PAGE...SCROLL THROUGH TO FIND THE CLASS THAT YOU ARE WORKING WITH

Have the students turn to the 10th page of their packet.  The students should use the words that you brainstormed to fill out the character traits page.  You may want to pull up the page with character traits so that they can copy the words down in their packets.

Let's review that story again...

Ask the students to turn to the last page of their packet.  You can ask for student volunteers to read each fact about Trombone Shorty found under the numbers.  Discuss the order that these event occurred in the story.  Ask the children to cut the facts out and then glue them, in order, to the numbered squares above.  You should work on this together.

Extra time?  Try this...

Pause the video after each riddle and give the kids a chance to give their answers.  Ask the students to raise their hands and then call on one or two students to take a guess.
