Listen to this part of a song by Stevie Wonder called "Happy Birthday"
"Happy birthday to ya Happy birthday to ya Happy birthday!"
That seems pretty straight forward, but that wasn't just a song to celebrate just anyone's birthday. Stevie Wonder wrote this song to encourage the passing of a bill that would give Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr his own holiday, to be celebrated at his birthday. At first only a few states celebrated Martin Luther King Day. Finally in 1986, eighteen years after being proposed, MLK Day was celebrated as a national holiday. Thanks to Stevie Wonder for fighting for this national day of remembrance!
And finally, a song that we worked on at school, "The Old Carrion Crow". Remember how we talked about this song possibly having two meanings.
