FRIDAY FROLIC'S

THE OLD FROG

"The Old Frog" is a song that comes to us from the Ozarks, which is a mountainous region that covers parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.  This is a funny song that uses a lot of silly words and phrases, and some that don't mean anything at all!

Limericks

A Limerick is a silly poem that is made up of 5 lines.  Most of the time they are super silly, and sometimes they don't even make sense!  They are called Limerick's because the first one was written in a county in Ireland called Limerick, Ireland. Limericks became popular back in the 1800's.  What's amazing is that they are still popular today.

The Limerick Song

I, Yi,yi, yi!
In China they never grow chili.
So sing me another verse that's worse than the first,
Make sure that it's foolish and silly!

1) There was a young fellow named Drew
who found an old shoe in his stew.
The waiter said "Lout,
don't wave it about,
or the others will want a shoe, too!

2) An ambitious young fellow named Matt
Tried to parachute using his hat.
Folks below looked so small
As he started to fall,
Then got bigger and bigger and SPLAT!

3) A circus performer named Brian

Once smiled as he rode on a lion.
They came back from the ride,
But with Brian inside,
And the smile on the face of the lion.

4) There was an Old Man with a beard,

Who said, “It is just as I feared! --
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard.”

5) There once was a man from Peru
Who dreamed he was eating his shoe.
When he woke up in fright
in the dark of the night
he found it was perfectly true!

6) A tooter who tooted a flute
tried to tutor two tooters to toot.
Said the two to the tutor,
"Is it harder to toot
or to tutor two tooters to toot?"

7) A flea and a fly in a flue
were caught, so what could they do?
Said the fly, "let us flee,"
said the flea, "Let us fly,"
So they flew through a flaw in the flue

Create your own limericks...

A Limerick needs to have 5 lines and follow a very specific rhythmic pattern.  Think about the ones we did in the song above.  There also needs to be a special order to the rhyming words.  Lines 1, 2, and 5 need to rhyme.  Lines 3 and 4 need to rhyme.  Use the template to create your own limerick.
