Like a Shish Kabab, the LINE goes through the head of each note for a LINE NOTE.

Just like when you get in a sleeping bag and have the blanket ON TOP of you and UNDERNEATH you, notes that sit in a SPACE have a LINE on TOP and UNDERNEATH them.
